CareRoster, a fictional scheduling platform used by home care agencies, has added a shift swap feature that lets caregivers trade shifts with each other inside the app. A scheduler must approve each swap before it takes effect.

How it works

  • A caregiver offers a shift they cannot work.
  • Qualified coworkers see the offer and can claim it.
  • The scheduler gets an alert and approves or declines.

The app checks each swap for overtime, travel distance and client preferences before it reaches the scheduler. Clients who have asked for a specific caregiver are flagged so the swap is not approved by mistake.

"Our schedulers were spending their evenings texting people to cover shifts. This moves most of that into the app," said Joan Reyes, operations manager at a fictional agency in the early test group.

What it costs

CareRoster says the feature is included in its standard plan at no extra charge. Agencies on older plans need to upgrade to use it.
