Harlan Valley Home Helpers, a fictional family-run agency, is marking 25 years in business this month. Founder Ruth Abbott started the agency from her kitchen table with two caregivers and a used station wagon.

Then and now

  • Started with 6 clients in one town.
  • Now serves about 210 clients across four rural counties.
  • Employs 140 caregivers, many of whom have been with the agency for more than ten years.

Rural care is different

Drives between clients can take 45 minutes, and winter roads close often. The agency keeps caregivers within the same few towns so clients see familiar faces and travel stays manageable.

"Out here you can't send a stranger. People want to know the caregiver's family," said Abbott, who still answers the office phone on Fridays.

What's next

Abbott's daughter, Claire, took over day-to-day operations last year. She plans to add a respite program for family caregivers next spring.
